Featured Photo Friday

Posted on August 1, 2014 by Loni Townsend

Much like M.J.’s pewter pegasus, sunflowers are a source of story inspiration for me.

My husband manages to keep our plants alive, even though I’m green-thumb impaired. This year, he planted sunflowers.

Sunflowers

These bright yellow beauties instill a sense of nostalgia every time I see them. Not that they have a significant place in my past, but their iconic dark centers and vibrant petals stirs up the creative story juices. When I look at this featured photo, I can hear a child giggling while she runs through grassy fields. Oh wait, that’s my daughter. πŸ™‚

Did you see M.J.’s post? Do sunflowers move you? If not, what does? Are you good with flowers?

I love sunflowers, and flowers in general. I have a green thumb, of sorts. Some things I can grow well and others I can’t, so I fill my small flower gardens with hardy plants that don’t require a lot of fuss. I enjoy spending time in my gardens. It’s very therapeutic.

You are very lucky, and I admit I’m a tad jealous. When I go outside, I start sneezing. And then my daughter douses me with the hose. I suppose it’s fun, but not very therapeutic.

Sunflowers are my very favorite flower. I have nothing even resembling a green thumb, so I mostly have some sad looking day lillies populating my equally sad looking gardens.

My mother-in-law is very good with flowers.

πŸ™‚ How can lilies be sad? They’re so pretty!

Very pretty! I accidentally grew a sunflower once when I was little. I found a seed and planted it and up grew this super tall stalk and then presto- sunflower! Except it didn’t happen all that quickly. πŸ˜‰ Also, when I was first reading I read ‘beauties’ as ‘beasties’, heh.

But, yanno, when I scrolled back up, in the biggest pic at the top, the flower does kinda look like it has teeth in the middle…Be very careful around that flower, Loni! Lol!

Nice shot! And in the fall, you can dry and eat the seeds. Yeah, sounds like a lot of trouble, doesn’t it?

Assuming our pumpkins don’t choke them out, we’ll probably do just that.

    Hi Loni.
I’m also ‘green-thumb impaired’. By the way, I like that phrase… it’s better than saying I’m useless when it comes to plants…

    I once killed a cactus.
How difficult is that? Very difficult. *sighs*
    Exactly.
    So that tells you.
    Need I say more?
    I don’t think so.

Hahaha. I feel your pain. I killed an orchid that had very simple instructions: 2 tablespoons of water once a week. Yeah…

I’m not good with keeping flowers alive. My favorite flowers are gerber daisies. I planted some one summer and they died instantly. I thought I was watering them as directed, but they’re SO sensitive!

At least you did water them! I tend to forget. πŸ™

I’m afraid my green thumb is also impaired. We’ve had a few bonsai’s in our condo over the past few years, but we can’t seem to keep them alive.

A bonsai is one that I haven’t tried. They epitomize patience and control over one’s life…definitely not me. πŸ™‚

The Farmer’s Market is a very inspiring place for photography. We have a large red barn that they use for the market. Very iconic.

Flowers are always inspiring, and sunflowers especially so. Beautiful picture, and I loved that you could hear your daughter’s laugher.

Green-thumb impaired? I’m more the Brown Thumb of Death when it comes to plants. It’s nice your husband like to do it. Sunflowers grow to about 8 feet here in Egypt. That’s too big for me. I like littler things like rose or hydrangea bushes. πŸ™‚

I don’t know what it is about them, but sunflowers lift my spirit. I like the perfume that called by that name too. πŸ™‚

I’m green-thumb impaired when it comes to indoor plants, but I’m okay (I’m gonna regret saying this!) when it comes to outdoor plants. Although my back garden looks more like a building yard at the moment. :/

    Hi, Loni,

What a charming image of you daughter running through the fields…. Sunflowers can certainly conjure up many lovely images.

Nature in whole inspires me. The sweep of a Weeping Willow tree, the scent of night blooming jasmine, the delicate softness of a rose petal … how could it not?

All flowers are tops when it comes to things I like to take pictures of. There were a ton of them all over the place at Trinity Lakes this past weekend. I do love sunflowers, but only planted them once. They have stubborn roots and it was hard to yank them out come fall clean-up time. I probably should have let them fade more before tackling that task!
